Create a Trauma-informed Care Workplace

Trauma-informed care means that you consider what has happened rather than what is wrong.

Creating a trauma-informed care workplace means that you create a safe environment where your people will become empowered, have a voice, make safe choices and manage power differences at work.  Trauma-informed care improves interpersonal skills, mental health, learning, affect regulation and more.

A Trauma-informed Care Approach ensures:
  • You realise the prevalence of trauma;
  • You recognise how trauma affects all individuals involved with the program, organisation or system, and staff;
  • You are able to respond by putting knowledge into practice.
(SAMHSA, 2012)
Burnout, which can contribute to the development of secondary trauma, can occur in workplaces where there is ongoing care of clients, demanding schedules, unhealthy workplace relationships, and long hours.
Responding to trauma means decreasing risks associated with misunderstanding of the person's reactions to presenting problems and decreasing risks associated with underestimating the need for appropriate referrals to treatment for trauma.  (TIP Series 57, 2014).
Trauma-informed care is about learning how to change your reactions to people, and how to respond effectively.
Trauma-informed care at work will also help you relate better with unhelpful and difficult clients and sustain healthy behaviours.
