Trauma-informed Care - Organisations with Adults

Trauma-informed care means that you consider what happened to your staff and how are you coping rather than what is wrong with your staff.

Trauma-informed care also means developing strategies to manage triggers from past trauma, managing emotions and behaviour, working with the staff member to improve motivation, interpersonal skills and resilience.
Often trauma results in aggressive behaviour and bullying while the person with these symptoms don't realise the link between behaviour and trauma.  A trauma-informed care workplace will have staff who understand the link and that, with support, change is possible.
Trauma-informed care service providers have updated policies and procedures to ensure they are trauma-informed practices; staff who are trained to be trauma-informed and trauma-informed practices that are supported by your people, system, and organisational vision and values.

Trauma is an experience that causes physical, emotional, and psychological distress from an event that is perceived to harm one's safety.  Trauma can be caused by emotional or physical abuse which can result from harassment, bullying, isolation, etc.  It can also be caused by external stressors which you may not be aware of such as a car accident, witnessing violence, sexual abuse, dysfunctional relationships, etc.  Stressors such as downsizing, lay-offs, changes at work can also become traumatic, especially when it is not managed well.

While workplace environments are becoming more stressful, trauma-informed care at your workplace can manage behaviour and productivity by working with the cause, and help staff change the way they relate to others as they understand the relationship between trauma and behaviour.  Trauma-informed care can also help staff gain insight into the cause of their own behaviour and seek professional help.  Trauma-informed care is about preventing psychological harm, and creating a psychological healthy workplace.

Staff will become equipped to support colleagues who have been through trauma and have concerning behaviours and/or interpersonal skills.  Staff will improve their mental health, behaviour and productivity.  The system of the workplace will support all staff to ensure safety, care and support.

Consulting will ensure that the trauma-informed care practices are supported within your system.

Reviewed and updated policies and procedures will ensure that the trauma-informed care practices are embedded in your workplace.

Staff mentoring and workshops will ensure staff are informed of trauma-informed care practices and skilled to apply relevant strategies and support staff.

Workplaces may include those who have staff who are helpers, educators, aged care facilities, providers in the criminal justice system, physicians, lawyers, hospitals, those who prefer to be proactive and maintain healthy and productive staff members and those who have bullying incidences at work, etc.
