Staying Focused to Improve Attention

Helping you stay focused can improve your attention span.  If you find your mind wandering think about:
  • Your goal, write it down in one sentence where you will always see it as a reminder.  When you find your thoughts moving away from your goal, look at the sentence and bring your attention back onto what you intend to complete.  You may decide to write each new idea down to complete later
  • If your goal seems too large and too distant, then write small steps you would have to take to reach the goal.  When you have completed each step, tick it off.  You may decide to reward yourself after each step.
  • Think about your goal, consider how it would feel to achieve it and image what it would look like
  • Consider the importance of reaching your goal and what it means for you and others
  • After completing each step, write your experience down in a journal, also write what you did well and what you would change to help you improve your ability to stay focused
  • For each thought and each feeling, consider if it is getting in your way or supporting you.  If it getting in your way then exchange it for something better or find out its cause to distinguish its strength
  • Enjoy the journey as the goal may become a stepping stone to something bigger.  ​
